Workshop Offered:
August 20-26, 2005

WORKSHOP: It's a fiction writing workshop (novel and short story) limited to a maximum of twelve participants. This allows Mr. Grant the opportunity to share his experience and offer guidance geared to individual needs. Writers have unique ways of expressing themselves -- what works for one, doesn't necessarily work for another. The worth of any writing workshop is measured by the writer leaving with more awareness than he or she brought with them -- that's why individualized critique and guidance are essential. No one can teach someone how to be a good writer -- one can be shown the path with guidelines to follow, but the actual travel is up to the writer. Remember: persistence rewards talent.

The workshop will also examine selected 20th Century American writers to explore their voice and contribution to world literature. What factors and influences made Faulkener, Fitzgerald and Hemingway giants of literature when each had a writing style and outlook uniquely differnt?

LOCALE: A writing workshop in Southwest Ireland with side trips to scenic mountain and coastal vistas, Celtic ruins and pre-historic monuments. A writer's dream holiday that will enliven the creative spirit and inspire even long dormant prose to burst forth. There's a sense of reversal when you enter the landscape and breathe the fresh sea air. It removes you from the modern world sending you back to another time - a time of innocence, simplicity and superstition. Like Verne's Time Machine, Beara can transport and drop you anywhere among its mountains, green valleys, hidden bays, rocky coasts or scattered fishing villages. Come join us and feel your creative spirit rise and blend with Beara's summer warm, salty breath.

Anam Cara is a retreat sited on five acres crisscrossed with narrow paths leading to secluded and wonderful locations to sit, think and write like the old stone ruins of the Mill House or the bee-hive hut cut from the slope of a hill. One path leads to the river fed by a series of water falls deep enough to swim, another to a bridge leading to an enchanted island or down the road a narrow path leads to the sea.

The retreat's facilities include phone and Internet access, fax, copier and printer if needed. Shelves of books are located throughout the house on a variety of subjects, a film library of over 600 movies and hundreds of music CD's are located in the multimedia loft.

TRAVEL: Getting to Beara is simple once you reach Ireland. Rent a car and drive or take the bus to Castletownbere on the Beara Peninsula. (See travel details through the link to the Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat Website.) Call us upon arrival and we'll give you directions up to Anam Cara.

COSTS: 1,150 Euros (includes tuition, lodging, all meals, and excursions). Exact cost breakdown included in information package.
